Sunday 14th December was the Northern Ireland Schools Trampoline Championships held at Ards Leisure Centre, Newtownards. 10 Abbey Gymnasts competed at this event along with over 200 hundred other competitors representing their schools, all hoping to qualify to the British Gymnastics Zonals in February 2015.
For Seaneen Tierney, Katie Townsend and Rachel Campbell
this was their first Trampolining competition and it was proven to be an eventful and exciting day for all. All Gymnasts represented themselves well and are a credit to both their schools and Club.
The most successful Abbey Gymnast from the Championships was 10 year old Kyle Blakely representing Mossley Primary School. Kyle competed in the Under 11 Novice category and with his level of difficulty and clean lines, quite easily took the title in his group.
Our most successful female Gymnast was Breanna Hennessey-Courtney representing Ballyclare High School. Breanna had extra tough competition in the Under 14 Elite category however, following on from her 3rd placing at the NI Championships the day before, Breanna secured her place for Zonals after taking 2nd place at NI Schools.
Some mistakes were also made and lessons learned from both experienced and less experienced gymnasts. Trampolining is the most harsh discipline in the sport of Gymnastics. One mistake can have serious consequences such as not being permitted to finish a routine, falls and missing out on that podium place. But these are all learning experiences for our young athletes. Not just in sport, but in life! There are always positives to be taken and lessons to be learned. Gymnastics teaches us to be hard working, focused, determined and gracious.
Well done to all our Gymnasts, you Coaches, Club and Schools are very proud of you.
