In June the Abbey Team Gym Mini and Youth Squads travelled to Newcastle Upon Tyne to compete at the Annual Newcastle Team Gym Open.
This was an exciting experience for the gymnasts and coaches as they were the first Northern Ireland/Irish Club to participate in such an event. The competition was tough. Although the girls were nervous performing infront of such a huge crowd and on unfamiliar equipment, they all performed exceptionally well. The Teams were fortunate to have podium training the evening before the competition, this gave them a bit of time to adapt to the fabulous Tumble Track and Team Gym Trampette and Vault at Newcastle.
The scores from the Abbey Minis; Caitlin Watts, Shannon Mullan and Robyn Fullerton were fabulous and placed them 1st at Level 4. The Abbey Youth Team; Lauren Campbell, Breanna Courtney, Cara Keenan and Nichole Taylor had a tougher challenge. The gymnasts all performed to the best of their ability and just missed out on a podium placing.
The trip was amazing as in not only did the girls have a great competition, the also got to see the sights in Newcastle including St James Park, home to Newcastle United and the Discovery Museum.
We are very thankful to our Team Gym Coach Shalana Adrain, the only fully qualified Team Gym Coach in Northern Ireland at present, for working tirelessly with our Teams. We look forward to an exciting and successful future in this discipline
