At this time in the gymnastics year, gymnasts will begin to focus on the British Gymnastics Proficiency Award Scheme. To some this is a new experience, to others you may be excited to work towards a new or more advanced level.
There are various types of Awards Programmes at Abbey at designed by British Gymnastics:
ABC Pre-School Awards are designed to develop physical literacy and movement skills in the most efficient and effective way whilst encouraging a sense of motivation, challenge and achievement in pre-school children. There are 3 levels to achieve for this age group and each Award develops various levels of Action, Balance and Coordination skills.
Proficiency Awards begin at Award Number 8 and work down to number 1. To achieve an Award, gymnasts must confidently, competently and consistently perform 7 of the 10 skills on each chart.
Advanced Proficiency encourage the progressive development of fitness, floor work, vault and rebound, hand held apparatus, dance and aerobics, asymmetric bars, balance beam and pairs and group work. Gymnasts progress through the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. In addition to badges and certificates, a Gold medal is also available once the Gold Fitness, plus a minimum of one Gold skill-based category has been completed.
Trampoline Proficiency develops the underlying core skills such as sound jumping technique, feet to feet non-rotation and somersault development, body landings and body landings to feet. This programme includes physical preparation. This scheme is built around 15 awards. 1-5 are designed to provide an all-round grounding, awards 6-10 develop actions through challenging skill sets and 11-15 allow progression to competitive standards.
Once Awards have been achieved, gymnasts will have the option to purchase badges and certificates for each Award. These will then be presented at our Annual Show on 21st June.
The skills required to achieve Awards have already been incorporated into recent lessons, this Term gymnasts should be ready to be assessed. There are no set rules as to how many Awards a gymnast can achieve. Every gymnast is encouraged to reach their full potential, this may mean that some achieve one award and some may achieve more. If your child has recently joined us from another Club, we will carry on from where your child left off in their old Club if certificates have been provided as proof of accomplishments.
