General Gymnastics Competition 25 April 2009

Abbey Gymnastics Centre hosted the 4th General Gymnastics Competition of the season on 25th April 2009. The host club were joined by clubs from Twisters (Londonderry), Shooting Stars (Eglinton) and Gazelle (Castlereagh).More than 70 gymnasts, both boys and girls competed in 3 levels of ability.
For many Abbey Gymnasts this was their first competition and all gymnasts performed well on each piece of apparatus.
In the Level 3 (7 &8years) category, Sam McCoo, who competed on 3 pieces of apparatus for the first time, executed routines very well and placed 1st on Floor, 1st on Vault and 3rd on Beam. In the same Level, Aoife Hayes placed 2nd on Floor. Ellen Cross also performed well on this piece of apparatus and picked up a bronze medal. This meant a clean sweep for Abbey on Floor at this level.
Rachael Eatock demonstrated good technique on her straddle over Vault and placed 3rd on this apparatus. Rebecca Reid narrowly missed out on a medal after performing the same Vault finishing in 4th place.
Abbey had two competitors in the Level 3 (9years+) category. Kaytlin Bruce showed great confidence on Floor and powerful Vaults picking up a silver and gold on these pieces. Amy Henderson also competed well on these pieces picking up a silver on Vault and placing 5th on Floor.
At level 4 (9&10years) the largest level in the competition, Abbey gymnast Brogan O’Hara placed 2nd on Vault closely followed by Amy McBride placing 3rd. Vivienne Walsh also performed well in this level finishing 5th on Vault.
In the Level 4 (11years +) five gymnasts represented Abbey. Rebekah Boyd was the most successful in this category placing 3rd on Vault. Alexandra Fitzsimmons, Alana Scott, Naomi Goodchild and Gemma McAllister all performed well in their first competition on floor and vault.
The Level 5 category was the most successful for Abbey. Robyn Jackson, Chelsea McClurg and Abigail Thompson, all experienced competitors performed well on all four pieces of apparatus. Robyn Jackson won Gold on floor, Silver on Vault and Bronze Overall. Abigail Thompson picked up a Silver medal on Beam and narrowly missed out on a medal on Vault placing 4th. Chelsea McClurg also demonstrated great confidence on the Beam picking up a Bronze medal and finished 4th Overall.
Well done to all the gymnasts who took part. All of these gymnasts are training hard for the Northern Ireland Championships for General Gymnastics which will be held at Shooting Stars Gym, Eglinton on 31st May. Good luck to all of you!
